Aguascalientes could become one of the few states in the country and the world to have a Museum of the History of Medicine, an ambitious project promoted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Aguascalientes through its Culture Commission, headed by Italia Marín Bosque. The initiative, which has been in the making for several years, remains strong and is moving forward steadily thanks to the coordinated work of physicians, academics, authorities, and specialists.
The specialist explained that the project is long-term, but already has an architectural design developed by students from the Architecture program at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, as a result of a prior agreement with the College. The model of the future museum is already ready, and its construction is planned for the Casa del Médico (Doctor’s House).
In Mexico, she mentioned, there are very few venues dedicated to the history of medicine; one of the most important is in Mexico City. Therefore, the creation of this cultural and scientific space in Aguascalientes will represent not only an act of historical preservation, but also a new tourist and academic attraction.
Currently, he said the collection of pieces for the museum has been successful, with nearly 70 objects considered of great historical value. Among them are antique sterilizers, surgical instruments from the last century, traditional medicinal herbs from the state, medical books, and documents dating back to the 17th century. Also planned is the addition of a terrace to the museum, designed to be a space for reflection and socializing open to the general public, with the potential to become a tourist attraction in the city.
Although progress has been considerable, the main limitation is the lack of financial resources for the museum’s construction. However, he expressed optimism about the support that the state government could provide, given its interest in promoting culture.
