The Governor of Aguascalientes, María Teresa Tere Jiménez Esquivel, announced that mezcal produced in the municipalities of Asientos, Calvillo, Cosío, El Llano, Rincón de Romos, Tepezalá, and the state capital have officially received the designation of origin.
“This is a triumph for the people, especially for the master mezcal makers who have preserved this knowledge for generations. Today, their work is protected, their authenticity is recognized, and the identity of Aguascalientes is strengthened,” the governor stated during the event held at the Government Palace.
As part of this new phase, multiple actions will be promoted to consolidate the mezcal sector, including: the creation of the Mezcal de Aguascalientes label, the launch of the Mezcal Route, the attraction of investment and technical support, as well as the promotion of this beverage both nationally and internationally. The Chamber for the Promotion and Development of Mezcal of Aguascalientes will also be created.
Jiménez emphasized that there are currently more than 1,900 certified hectares of agave and maguey, and they will seek to double this area to strengthen local production.
“We are going to provide more support in training, equipment, and certification processes. We want a mezcal with the highest quality standards,” he stated.
The general director of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Santiago Nieto Castillo, underscored the importance of the recognition:
“This distinction honors artisanal work and offers a competitive advantage by positioning mezcal as a product that combines nature, history, and culture in a specific region.”
For his part, Esaú Garza de Vega, head of the Secretariat of Economic Development, Science, and Technology (Sedecyt), emphasized that this step marks the beginning of a new era for Aguascalientes, with opportunities in tourism, the economy, culture, and local experiences.
“This result was possible thanks to the coordination between producers, the government, and citizens,” he noted.
Wenceslao Bautista Rodríguez, president of the Aguascalientes Maguey and Mezcal Product System, expressed his gratitude for the institutional support and recognized the collective effort that made it possible to achieve this milestone.
“It is a shared achievement that strengthens our roots and projects our traditions into the future,” he said.
During the ceremony, certificates were presented to mezcal producers, and state and municipal authorities, legislators, and representatives of the state’s mezcal and tourism sectors were present.
