In the early hours of this Sunday, an armed attack was reported in a nightclub in Aguascalientes. The attack left two victims dead, one of whom was identified as an element of the Investigative Police of the state Attorney General’s Office.

Preliminary reports indicate that the events occurred around 3:46 in the morning of this October 13, in a bar called “Hermoso Cariño”, which is located in the La Cantera shopping center, at the height of Juan Pablo II Boulevard.

One of the murdered people was identified as Juan Carlos Martínez Araujo. The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Aguascalientes shared an obituary on its social networks in which it identified him as a “colleague of the Investigative Police.”

“We pray for his eternal rest and prompt resignation of his relatives. Rest in Peace,” reads the publication made by the Aguascalientes authorities, which did not provide further details about what happened.

Unofficially, it was reported that Juan Carlos Martínez arrived with a companion and a woman whose identity was kept secret at the bar mentioned above, around 3:25 a.m. Three men carrying a backpack hanging on their chest entered the same place.

After a few minutes, these individuals opened fire against Commander Araujo and his companions. The officer activated his weapon to repel the attack and it transpired that he managed to shoot down one of the attackers, according to reports from La Jornada.

However, Commander Araujo received seven bullet impacts that caused him to lose his life. Faced with this situation, the other two attackers fled in different directions. One went to Juan Pablo II Boulevard and the other went to San Marcos Boulevard.

Although local media reported the arrest of one person, the authorities in Aguascalientes have not issued a statement confirming this information.

In addition to the police officer who was on his day off, the man who was with him also lost his life after the attack. Their bodies were transferred to the vicinity of the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) to perform the corresponding legal autopsy.

Later, personnel from the state Attorney General’s Office went to the scene where they found 9 mm spent cartridges. Because the investigations are still ongoing, the possible causes of the armed attack have not been determined.

Between January 1 and October 10 of this year, the murder of 237 police officers has been reported in Mexico, with an average of one victim each day, according to figures from the organization Causa en Común.

The states with the highest number of police officers murdered nationwide are Guanajuato (42), State of Mexico (22), Chiapas (18), Nuevo León (16), Baja California (12), Jalisco (12), Tamaulipas (11) and Michoacán (10).
