Chemical spill at León, Guanajuato plant kills 5 workers

An accident inside the Municipal Treatment Plant belonging to the Sewerage and Drinking Water System of León (Sapal), left five dead workers.

Preliminarily, it was reported that a chemical spill caused the death of these 5 workers, the accident was confirmed through a statement. “Sapal has always had strict security measures and protocols and from the first moment, we focused all our efforts to clarify what happened. We will take all relevant actions so that tragedies like this do not happen again. We send our deepest condolences of their families, to whom we extend our support ”reads the document.

The magnitude of the accident caused the closure of the roads near Arroyo Hondo street, towards the exit to San Francisco del Rincón, the area where said wastewater treatment plant is located.

The identity of the victims was not revealed by SAPAL, as well as what was the chemical substance that caused the death of the workers. It is worth mentioning that on September 23, when the Potable Water and Sewerage System of León (Sapal) withdrew the wastewater treatment concession that for 20 years was in the hands of the private company, Ecosis III.

It was reported that this measure represents an annual saving of 100 million pesos, which was paid to Ecosis III for its services.

The mayor of León, Héctor López Santillan, assured at the time of concluding the concession that the agency has the work team and resources to carry out the work in a timely manner thanks to an investment of 1.5 billion pesos in infrastructure.
